Mohsen Zayani is a young Tunisian man originally from Sebiba Delegation, Kasserine, who lives in Tunis because of his work as a street vendor. On September 8, 2022, a customs patrol raised one of the streets adjacent to Habib Thameur Square after discovering a quantity of smuggled cigarettes in one of the vehicles belonging to one of the traders there. During the raid, clashes broke out between customs officers and traders, including Mohsen Zayani, who was consequently shot by a Tunsian customs officer. Subsequently, customs vehicles left the scene, leaving Mohsen bleeding on the ground, while people around him called for an ambulance to take him to the hospital quickly. After Mohsen was transferred to the emergency hospital at Charles Nicolle and his death was confirmed hours after his arrival, the Tunisian customs authority issued a clearing statement. In the statement, they denied that the officer who fired the shot deliberately hit Mohsen, who was inside the car and reportedly attempted to flee it. According to the statement, the officer’s actions forced one of his colleagues to fire shots into the air and at the car’s wheels, with one of the shots hitting the driver. However, some photos that went viral on social media and news outlets showed bullet holes in the car’s front and side windows, which is incompatible with the narrative of the official authorities.
