On November 8, 2022, Adel, a 60-year-old café owner, was sitting in his café when a police car stopped outside and officers entered, heading directly toward him. They questioned him about his presence there, and when he explained that he owned the café, one officer confiscated his phone and searched its contents without consent, violating his right to privacy and personal data protection.
The officers then accused him of engaging in illegal online betting and gambling, claiming as their only “evidence” that his phone was connected to the internet. They seized the phone and asked him to accompany them to the police station on “Rue de Cologne”.
At the station, according to Adel, he was physically assaulted by one of the officers when he asked about the reason for his detention. Despite being in poor health and having had one leg amputated due to severe diabetes, he was not allowed to take his medication and was kept waiting for several hours. His money was also confiscated, and he was later summoned to court without being informed of the charges and without any official report being drawn up.
