The victim, 33-year-old Hamza Dridi, died on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.

According to information documented by the Association, the victim had been detained for more than one year and nine months without having been convicted or sentenced by any court. He had been awaiting his trial session, scheduled for 21 October 2026, when his life came to an end under unclear circumstances, amid an official lack of transparency regarding the events surrounding his death.

According to information documented by the Association through the victim’s family, Hamza Dridi experienced severe psychological distress in the period preceding his death following a four-day interruption of the water supply to his cell. This prevented him from attending to his basic daily needs. He had informed his family of these conditions prior to his death.

The combination of these grave conditions, which the authorities concerned continue to deny, and the subsequent death of the victim raises serious questions regarding the prison administration’s responsibility for his death and constitutes a serious violation of the right to life and of the rights guaranteed to persons deprived of their liberty. Furthermore, Hamza Dridi should not have remained in detention, given the absence of sufficient legal grounds to justify his continued detention and the fact that the duration of his pre-trial detention had exceeded the maximum period permitted by law.

In this context, Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms condemns the continued violations faced by detainees, the alarming increase in suspicious deaths inside prisons, and the authorities’ failure to address the deterioration of basic services in places of detention, which undermines the dignity and physical and psychological safety of detainees.

The Association calls on the judicial authorities to immediately launch an independent, transparent and timely investigation into all circumstances surrounding the death of Hamza Dridi, ensure that justice is served, and hold accountable anyone found to have been responsible or negligent, in accordance with the law.

Finally, Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms calls for an end to the policy of secrecy, respect for the right of access to information, and the adoption of transparency in the management of state institutions, while ensuring compliance with the law and the protection of rights and freedoms. The Association also stresses the need to respect the memoranda of understanding concluded with the Ministry of Justice, to expedite their reactivation, and to open prisons to specialized human rights bodies and organizations so that they can monitor detention conditions. Such access is essential to ensuring justice for all victims, supporting the reform process, and addressing the ongoing crisis and violations within prison institutions.

[291
271
231
230
post-9297","violations","type-violations","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","violation_type-violation-of-the-right-to-life","governorate-manouba-governorate","case_status-231","ecupation-230
["GET
