Tarek Khoufi received a complaint from the husband of a member of the Council of Regions and Districts following the publication of a video with a critical tone. The complaint was filed after his electoral banner was torn during the 2023 electoral campaign. The complainant claimed that the video\u2019s content was directed at him and accused Khoufi of defamation and insulting him.<\/p>\n

Tarek Khoufi was prosecuted under Article 86 of the Telecommunications Code, which states that \u201cany person who intentionally harms others or disturbs their peace through public telecommunications networks shall be punished by imprisonment for a period ranging from one to two years and a fine from one hundred to one thousand dinars.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

During the hearing, he was expelled from the courtroom after attempting to defend himself, as he did not have legal representation. An in absentia sentence of six months in prison was issued against him. He served five months before being released, with his detention lasting from 27 October 2024 to 26 February 2025.<\/p>\n

After his release, it was revealed that two additional cases had been filed against him:<\/p>\n

The first case concerns a complaint submitted by a member of the local council in Oued Ellil on charges of defamation, following social media posts published by the victim of the violation. In these posts, he did not mention any names nor directly accuse anyone; however, the complainant claimed that he was the person referred to. He also accused Khoufi of hostility toward the state due to his trade union activities, which was recorded in the confrontation report.<\/p>\n

The second case was filed by a member of the Council of Regions and Districts following a video in which the victim spoke about what he described as illegal practices during the electoral campaign. In the video, he stated that one of the candidates had previously received a final court ruling sentencing them to six months in prison and a financial fine for selling property belonging to others, without mentioning any names, noting that he possesses evidence to support this claim.<\/p>\n

Tarek Khoufi was summoned on 8 January 2026 by the fast-track unit and informed that the hearings for the two cases were scheduled for 12 March 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
