On Saturday, November 18, 2023, Mohamed was present in the Bouhajla area of the Kairouan governorate, where he was stopped by a security patrol affiliated with the National Guard that was conducting identity checks as part of a routine operation. He was arrested and taken to the Research and Inspection Brigade of the National Guard in Bouhajla in order to question him regarding several cases for which he was reportedly wanted, according to the lawyer of the victim.<\/p>\n

During the interrogation, the victim was subjected to verbal abuse, physical assault, and violations of his bodily integrity. He was slapped repeatedly across the face, kicked, and beaten with batons on various parts of his body. He was also struck several times on the face by the head of the brigade, who was present at the time. These acts caused serious physical injuries, with visible marks of violence on his face.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the head of the Kairouan branch of the Tunisian League for Human Rights provided testimony to the Intersection Association for Rights and Freedoms stating that the victim had also been sexually assaulted with a baton by one of the officers present. As a result of the severe violence, he lost consciousness several times while other National Guard officers allegedly mocked and laughed at him. He was also forced to sign the interrogation report using his fingerprint without his consent, as one officer held his finger and stepped on his hands with his shoe.<\/p>\n

Following these events, the victim was held in custody for 48 hours without receiving any medical care despite his deteriorating health condition after the abuse. On the night of November 20, 2023, he was transferred to the regional hospital in Bouhajla, where the doctor reportedly only administered sedative medication before returning him to detention.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, November 22, 2023, he was brought before the Public Prosecutor, who opened an investigation into the violence he had endured and referred him to a forensic doctor on the same day. The forensic examination confirmed the presence of injuries resulting from acts of violence, including significant damage to his left ear.<\/p>\n

He was subsequently sent to provide his testimony at the police station in Kairouan on Thursday, November 23, 2023. On Friday, November 24, 2023, he was referred to the Investigating Judge at the Court of First Instance in Tunis, where the investigation continued with him being treated as a suspect in the cases for which he had been wanted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
