On March 31, 2018, Omar was at Rades Olympic Stadium to support his favorite football team. Subsequently, a confrontation erupted between sports fans and the police in the stands of the stadium, extending outside the stadium\u2019s perimeter, which led to the chase of several spectators, including Omar Labidi, who ran towards Miliane River and jumped out of fear of being arrested and subjected to violence by the police. He remained struggling in the muddy waters, seeking help until one of the police officers approached him but refused to rescue him while he was fighting for his life, reportedly telling him, according to his friends who were present there, \u201cLearn to swim.\u201d Omar passed away on the same day, and his case remains open to this day with no accountability or trial for the perpetrators, who are still at liberty.<\/p>\n
Since the death of Omar Labidi, up to the latest session on January 13, 2022, the case witnessed several breaches, starting with categorizing the as involuntary manslaughter and not rescuing a person in a state of danger. In contrast, the defense team asserted that all the existing evidence suggests that what happened to Omar Labidi was intentional homicide. In December 2021, the Criminal Department of the Court of First Instance in Ben Arous referred 14 police officers to trial on the abovementioned charges. However, the case was postponed to March 31, 2022, to coincide with the fourth anniversary of Omar\u2019s death. Due to the strike of the judicial sector, the session was rescheduled again to a later date.
